Early in our friendship, when I ran into teenaged Karlie on a flight from our hometown of St. Louis to New York City, that’s exactly what we bonded over. How thrifty we talkin’? Well, Karlie’s trick was to downgrade to coach the first-class tickets that major fashion houses bought her, saving the difference in airline credits so she could bring her family along on what would become a dizzying career in fashion. I’ll never forget watching her fold that 6’1" frame into a back-row seat! By 2012 she’d managed to hoard enough credit to fly the entire Kloss clan to Denmark on an ancestral pilgrimage.
