Linda Blissett is a textile/fashion designer who specialises in handwoven
fabrics. Linda
aims to create unique pieces of wearable art, handwoven scarves, wraps
and bags. Each design is an individually crafted to create a
distinctive mood or texture in fabric. No two pieces are identical,
although themes flow from one piece to another, all of her designs are truly unique. I had the pleasure of interviewing her before the unveiling of her new collection, Dísarblót in Iona, at London Fashion Week this Sunday.
1. What was the inspiration behind this collection?
For this collection I was thinking of opposites and the theme of red
and white queens and goddesses came up like good and bad for example
Freya (love) and Helium (goddess of underworld), ice and and fire
and due to my Scottish ancestry was always interested in Celtic
mythology and was with my friend who’s an accessory designer from
Iceland and is very much into her culture and Norse mythology so we
married the two together and that’s how the name of the collection
came up Disarblot in Iona which relays to the Norse and Celtic
meanings.
2. Who’s the target audience for this collection?
I’ll say it targets people who love the unusual and original and one
off pieces, which could be any age bracket in reality just goes down
to personal taste.
3. What is your brand ethos?
As I answered above really, I’d say my designs would cater for a
broad range of customer with a attention to detail and who
appreciates the unusual.
4. Why have you chosen Oxford Fashion Studio to showcase your
amazing designs?
As I love the way Carl and Tiffany let me present my designs in as I
would like them to shown and is always a well run high calibre
event which suits my customer base.
5. What made you into the designer that you are today?
Perseverance and strong work ethic in my myself, my family and
friends and event companies like Carl and Tiffany for giving me the
chance to show my work.
6. What other designers do you aspire to be as successful as?
I’ve always admired Vivienne Westwood for her originality from a
very very young age in the early 80’s I’ve always looked up to her
and later on Jean-Paul Gaultier and John Galliano masters of
couture and keeping their uniqueness, which now after my 3rd
collection to date my trademark is showing through.
7. If you could put your designs on any celebrity, which would
you choose and why?
Again I couldn’t name names but a celebrity who appreciates the
unusual and with a strong personality themselves as I believe
that’s who my clothes come alive once they’re worn.
8. When you are asked, “What is Fashion?” What is the first
thing that comes to mind?
I’ll say it’s whatever you perceive it to be, whether it’s on trend
on high street so you’re following a fashion… to be want to wear
designer ones offs if you’re bold enough to.. to setting your own
fashion by being you’re own leader if you’re bold enough.
9. What advice would you give to an up and coming designer?
I’ll say to keep at , believe in yourself, it’s expensive and you
won’t always make money and don’t listen to non believers who try to
sway you, be strong and you’ll get there!
10. What is next for you and your brand?
I would like to do more publications, more collaborations in shows.
I’m doing three this season to go forward, maybe get my designs
stocked in a few showrooms or open my own smile emoticon and just keep growing and growing.
